Sculpins

We are fortunate to have several species that are often seen on dives in the Campbell River area. Like the large Cabezon to the peculiar Grunt Sculpin, they typically have broad, flat heads and slender tapering bodies. Often with bright body colours, sculpins will blend in with their backgrounds as camouflage and remain still unless they feel threatened.
Some like the Scalyhead Sculpin can be aggressive about protecting their territories while other like the Grunt Sculpin with hid in the empty shell of a giant barnacle as a defence against predators. The nocturnal Sailfin Sculpin stands out with its long unicorn like fin while the Red Irish Lord has some of the most outstanding colours.
